maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
So the Universe saw that I was close to completing 30 days of blogging (HA! Blogging! HA!!) and decided the internet should not work last evening. You were spared robbed of my brilliance.
Poor bastards.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Tomorrow is the first of December. The long, slow, hellish slide to Christmas accelerates.
Ugh.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Look at this awesome print:

I LOVE IT ALL!

I'm just like that.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's Prompt:
What do you like to do to celebrate an accomplishment?

Honestly?  A cocktail.  I am particularly fond of the Dark and Stormy.
The old school G'n'T will do in a pinch.

It should be noted - I celebrate very, very, very few accomplishments.

How about you?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
I defrosted the freezer today.  The excitement never starts...

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

So this happened just up the road:

Lego worth $20,000 stolen from Ont. toy store,
three men sought

I'm thinking, it being Christmas and all, these items will be relatively easy to move.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Galen Weston Jr may be the cutest billionaire ever, but come on!
That is just gross.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I went to the thrift store today. I spent $4.  I also went to the big garden centre.  I stood in the green house filled with (the nice man said) about 1200 fresh cut pines.  Questionable use of natural resources, yes, but it smelled amazing.  I wandered around for half an hour, then bought basil seeds.  My life is sooooooooooo glamoiurous.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)

Happy Thanksgiving! If you are celebrating, I hope you're having a great day!

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

So it's warm again. Weather, you are a tease!

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

My grandpuppy, Ziggy, looks like this:

All over. Tonight, after relieving herself, she then sat back down in said relief.

The takeaway?

It's hard to get dogshit out from under your nails.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

We're watching Daredevil. It's really good. It's really good in spite of the following exchange:

* Matt: You just opened one of the cuts on your back.

* Claire: How do you know that?

* Matt: I can taste copper in the air.

Matt, honey, if you taste copper in the air when someone bleeds, you should ask your self why you are spending so much time with Vulcans. Just sayin'

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's prompt:

If you're celebrating Thanksgiving today (or even if you're not!), tell us about the best cook in your family.

I have lots of great cooks in my family. My maternal grandmother was an amazing baker. My paternal grandmother made the best turkey dinner I have ever eaten. My mom is a great cook when she puts her mind to it (I am not even counting the time she somehow used vanilla in place of soy sauce. ) My paternal grandfather was a chef in a pretty swanky hotel or two. My maternal granfather had three or four specialties, but none of us have ever been able to reproduce them. My mother-in-law is a terrific cook (her chocolate chip cookies suck, for some odd reason.) My sister makes fabulous meals. Even my three now-adult kids are great cooks.   We don't have to endure any bad meals. We're pretty lucky.

maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
So my daughters and I made 200 pork and chive wontons today.  For reasons.  They turned out well.  We also made banana blueberry muffins.  They turned out rubbery.  Life is one big adventure.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~

MY husbad has started watching the old The Outer Limits episodes. (1963 to 1965).  Aside from like a zillion familiar faces ( William Shatner &  James Doohan to name just two Canadians...) the special effects.  Wow.  I bet at the time they were impressive.  Now they look like some 8 year old made them flipbook-style. We have become so jaded.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~~:~:~:

"A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" was on tonight.  I'd never seen it before.  And I've only seen 12 minutes of it now.  It's no "A Charlie Brown Christmas," that's for sure.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's prompt:

Who is an expert you admire and why?

Julia Child!  She wanted to do a thing, then did it, then wanted to show other people how to do it, and then did it.  She almost single handedly changed the way North American eat.  Also, her recipes work and they are invariably tasty.

maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Okay, so, today, it really snowed. For real.  The dog thought it was the best thing ever. Loudly.  Ah, the enthusiasm of youth! Foolish, foolish youth.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I watched the first two episodes of Daredevil on Netflix (in preparaton for watching Jessica Jones. Because there must be rules!).  Very good so far.  Dark and moody.  And bloody and violent.  So yeah, good.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I have to go to a work thing (my husband's) on the fifth of Dec.
Feel the dread, feel it!
Do you like attending these things?  Does anyone actually enjoy it?

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Look at this thing:

Black Forest Pavlova With Espresso Cream

I vote yes
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's prompt:
What do you do better than anyone else?

Really?  I don't know if it's better than anyone else, but I make awesome turkey.  I mean, really really good.  People who do not like turkey say, "I don't like turkey, but that was good turkey"  (leading me to wonder why you'd eat something expecting not to like it - life's too short)  And chocolate chip cookies.  People say 'OMG, you make the best  chocolate chip cookies!' which, you know, I make the recipe as printed on the chocolate chip bag.  Exactly. So maybe it's not that I make them better than anyone else, but that I make them at all..  Hmm.
How about you?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
IT SNOWED!  Okay, it was more like itty bitty styrofoam pellets were being hurled from the sky, but essentially, it snowed.  I guess this means I gotta get serious about Christmas.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
I have decided to get serious about Christmas by hosting a cookie baking party.  Have any of you ever done it?  Do you have tips and treats to share?
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
I saw an ad this evening for a six-hour, three night televison event - Childhood's End, based on the Arthur C Clarke work of the same name.  I got unreasonably excited.  I've never even read it.  But when sci-fi things are great, they are amazing! (And when they are not, lord lord LORD! they are not - I am looking directly at you, Falling Skies - hang your head in shame.). Here's hopin'
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Aren't these cupcakes insanely cute?

If only God had given me patience instead of so much beauty.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Anyone watch Jessica Jones?  If so, what's the verdict?

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I have to sleep now. Night night!
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
I think winter has finally arrived.  Sigh.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I remember looking forward to the holidays.  Now I just dread them.  Ho fucking ho ho ho.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
The problem may be chocolate. Or lack thereof.  I should remedy this as soon as possible.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
How is it the 20th of November?  I'm still trying to prepare for last Easter.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
So I went down to the basement to put the two giant bags of on-sale chocolate chips I bought today in the freezer (so that they'll last until I need them for Christmas) and I found two big bags of Halloween candy I must have bought last year.  Not that any part of my body needs two big bags of halloween candy (okay, maybe my taste buds) but it's just so good to know that in case of a dire emergency, I have lots of little Butterfingers on hand.  It's good to be prepared.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Look at these cute cupcakes:

What's the cutest thing you've ever eaten?

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's prompt:

What do you hope happens by the end of this year?

What kind of question is that?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
I made roast beef today. With mushroom gravy.  I hadn't made roast beef in ages and ages and ages.  It was really good. Just sayin'

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

The weather was lovely today  - - 17 C.  Now it's 0C.  Stupid weather.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Todays prompt:

Where would you want to retire if money wasn't an issue?

I'd have a luxury suite on a cruise ship, one that went where I wanted when I wanted.  There'd be a lot of time spent in the Carribean.  And Hawaii.  And the possibly non-existent Australia.   I think it would be the perfect retirement.

How about you?  Where would you retire?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Nothing exciting to share today.  I know I did something today, I must have.  But ... yeah, I got nuthin'.  'Missing time' as they used to say on the XFiles.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Look at this cool quilt.  I love it.  I think I will make one.

Not, you know, today or anything.  But eventually.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

What do you hope people remember about you after you're gone?

I hope they have a happy thought about me.  I don't even care what it is.

How about you?
What do you want people to remember about you?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
So my daughter tells me tomorrow is her birthday.  I was sure it's the day after.  You'd think I'd remember - I was there after all.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Went to my other daughter's place this evening to deliver some things that got left behind in the move.  We stayed for take out.  If you are ever in st catharines, go here and get the red curry.  It's got bamboo strips and pineapple and grapes (!?!) and it's delicious.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's Prompt:

What is one place you need to see to feel like your life is complete?

This one is easy.  Australia.  Because I'm not entirely sure it exists.

Hear me out.

I mean, on an intellectual level, I know it's there. Or, well, I believe it's there.  But on another level, well, do you remember being a kid and drawing maps and inventing distant lands?  You always put them far away, didn't you?  And filled them with plants and animals that were strange and exotic, so unlike anything at home.  Sunny beaches, Giant spiders. Ayer's rock. Killer snakes. AND THE SEASONS ARE BACKWARDs!!!

Sound familiar?

HOW ABOUT YOU?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Running late again.  Sigh.  I do fuck-all and it takes all day.  How is that even a thing?

:~:~;~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
This commercial, with the guy milking the giraffe an getting a bucket full of skittles?  WTF?
:~:~;~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I googled "modern Christmas" today.  Everything it showed me was basically black and white.  That's even a bit too modern for me.  But I liked this:

and this:

All I need is lots of PVC pipe and lots of ambition. Yeah, that's all.

:~:~;~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's prompt:

Pretending you have the expertise to make the product a reality, what do you wish you could invent?

Well, the top two contenders are (1) the Star Trek-style transporter (because I like being places, but not getting to them) and (2) a machine that takes the story you are thinking and puts it on paper.  Or into your computer.  Whatever.  I think both of these inventions would benefit mankind.  Or at least me.

How about you? What would you invent?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Spectre is terrible.  Boring and terrible.  No wonder Daniel Craig keeps badmouthing it.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Saw the preview for Leonardo D's upcoming movie, The Revenant.  The trailer looks amazing.  But then again, the trailer for Spectre looked pretty good, and we all know how that turned out.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
The weather was lovely here today, so we did yard work.  Lather, rinse, and repeat.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
I am not looking forward to the holidays.  I don't remember the last time I did.

How about you?

maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
I'm being dragged, er, taken to see Spectre at 10:30 pm (and it's 2 and a half hours long because why?? No, really, why?) so I am posting my oh-so-brilliant prose now so all y'all won't be left without.  Give, give, give - that's all I do...

(Wow - 'give' is a weird looking word, esp three times in a row.)

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I need one of these:

I might just have to make one.  Or an XFiles version.
For reasons.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

I can't recommed this book enough:

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Have you read anything good lately?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
I cant think much beyond the horrible attacks on Paris today.
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Apparently some elite athletes cheat.  I'm shocked, I say, shocked!

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
You probably saw how this six year old answered a tricky math problem, but if you didn't, be sure to check it out.  It made me laugh. A lot. Enough to disconcert the dog.  The head scratching is the best.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Speaking of the dog, she turned one today.  How time flies when you are puppy proofing your whole friggin' life.  Good thing she's cute.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Best red pasta sauce ever.  Seriously.  I was sceptical, (or maybe skeptical? I am never sure) but it's both crazy easy and crazy delicious. Also versatile.  Great for pasta, pizza, veal parm - all your red sauce needs. (Don't act like you don't have red sauce needs - we all know the truth.)   Try it - I dare you.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Today's prompt:

What is the hardest part of a big project: getting the energy to begin, finding the time to work on it, or feeling down that it's over?
Way to hit a nerve, NaBloPoMo prompts. It's all hard, but I think getting not only the energy but the confidence to begin is the hardest part.  Like most of us, I hate starting anything where I don't know the outcome.  And whatever you attempt, it's never as good as you imagined it should be (or as good as 'I' imagined it should be, speaking strictly for my overly-self-critical self.  Sigh.
How about you?
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Why does Chopped existIt seems like it's on all the time and it's crap.  The drama is so manufactured and fake and the contestants are all annoying. Really, people, you are cooking, not curing cancer.   Why yes, it is on right now.  Why do you ask?
~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~

It was cold today.  Very cold.  The grass was crispy when I stepped on it this morning.  Winter again.  Poop.

~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~
Today's Question:

What is the first thing you do every single day (I mean, after you hit the snooze button)? When did that step in your routine begin?
I pull my glasses out the my bedside drawer and put them on. I can't find anything else until I've got my glasses.  This has been my routine since I got glasses in fifth grade.  I know a lot of kids hate their glasses and don't want to wear them, but I was so grateful to be able to see decently I didn't care.  (Honestly, getting called "Four-eyes" was soooooooo lame it barely registered).   Since we've acquired a live-in grand-puppy, my next step is to put on whatever comes to hand (clean shirt, dirty shirt, bathrobe, paint shirt...) and run her down the stairs and out into the yard so she can conduct any early morning buisness.
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Weather was lovely all day but now it is cold.  Fie on winter! Fie, I say!
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
I spent today...hanging curtains and putting yet more IKEA furniture together.  But it's all more or less done, now.  They are living in their place, and we are back in ours.  As exhausting as it was having them here, I will miss the company.  The dog is great, but she's not really chatty.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~
I heard Adele's new single, Hello, today.  It is -- fine. It's okay.  How exactly, and why, did it break the internet?
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~

Everyone (well, not quite, but a lot of people) have Christmas lights not just up, but lit.  I get wanting to hang lights while it's relatively warm and ice free, but plugging them in In November?  BEFORE Remembrance Day?  Wasting all that electricity?  What kind of crazy is that?  Why, in my day...
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~
Have any of you ever reupholstered a chair?  I mean, stripped it down to the frame and more or less started from scratch?  I am pretty much evenly divided between wanting to tackle a redo of a chair that looks mostly exactly like this (the upholstery on mine is icky pink):

- and wanting to sit down until the feeling goes very far away.

If you have attempted such a (mad) project, how did it go?  Any tips and/or tricks you'd like to offer?
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~
Back to our regularly scheduled questions tomorrow.  Woo hoo!
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
I thought I was tired yesterday.  HA!
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Spent the day building IKEA furniture.  Lots and lots of IKEA furniture.  While I don't find it as impossible as some would suggest, it is time consuming.  Very.  But we were rewarded with dinner at MANDARIN.  So I'm both exhausted and stuffed.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
There's no "official" question for today, so instead I will leave you with this:

Yeah, why???
maybe_amanda101: (adopt a tribble)
Tired.  So tired.
:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:

Looking forward to this:

Luther season 4: BBC to air it as three-hour special

because of this:

Yeah, I'm a bit shallow.

:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:
Today's question;
What was your biggest fear as a child? Do you still have it today? If it went away, when did your feelings changes?

I'm pretty sure it was the usual, fear of abandonment. I used to have nightmares that I woke up and everyone in was gone - everyone (I could definitely sympathize with Mulder in Je Souhait.)  Humans are social/herd animals, so I am sure that accounts for part of it.   Yes, I still have this fear, but it's less, um, omnipresent than it used to be.  I think. Maybe?
How about you?
