For exchanges, as long as I'm fulfilling the minimum basic requirement, I focus on what I can actually do, not necessarily on the 65 things that make up my recipient's dream fic. (Possibly this makes me a bad person, but you know, whatever.) And I'm not a mod, but if you feel like you can't write 2000 words on one particular scenario, I've seen people in other years break the word count into two shorter stories. And who wouldn't want a story from you? I mean, really. (I am assuming you are writing fic. I could be going wrong right there.)

Actually, it's not even that so much. It's that I thought *I have no preconceived notions as to what I could/should/will write and the world is my fic oyster.* And then I saw the list of preferences, and thought *Well, Amanda darling, clearly you are full of shit* because I did have some notions but I just didn't realize it. (And it's not like my recipient was so demanding, either. It might have been easier if they had been. "'Mulder and Skinner pose as daycare workers to break up a ring of international toy counterfeiters'? That should be easy!")

But your idea to break the word count up is a good one. ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean about too little direction being difficult, too. IDK, you could ask the mods to ask your recipient to cough up some prompts (with the understanding that you wouldn't necessarily write all/any of them).

Good luck on your story. I think asking the mods to post some questions to your giftee might be a good idea. Or, just do as Circe suggests. Or, you know, for a Christmas theme, Skinner could be Santa and Mulder could be a "helper" at the mall. Hijinks would ensue! Or not.
