NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 30
Nov. 30th, 2016 08:25 pmWarm and overcast. Now it's raining like a mofo with thunder and lightning to boot. The dogs do not approve.
~~~~~
Look at this mad thing:
It is wrong on every possible level, and yet, it looks so darned festive!
~~~~~~
When my husband and I go somewhere, or just go for a drive, we scout around for likely locations in which to take refuge when the zombie apocalypse comes, as you do. My first choice has long been an abandoned graffiti covered water park up the road (my husband was not in favour, calling the site both indefensible and impractical, but hey, water park, right?) I drove past today. They've leveled the site in preparation for condos. CONDOS! This is why we can't have nice things.
~~~~~
Prompt:
Nov. 30: Have you chosen a word of the year for yourself for 2017? What is it? If not, what words would you consider?
Is this a thing? Do people do this? I suppose if 2016 had to have a word it would be "sucktacular" because between the deaths, illnesses, brexit, ongoing refugee mess, and that fucking election, thing have sucked. So my word for 2017 would be "better," as in "things can only get..." But I think we all know there's a whole lot worse for things to be.
The race is evidently to the bottom...
~~~~~
One word Prompt: Faded Which reminds me of the book I started reading today, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which I have only been meaning to read since it came out in 2010, but never did. The author mentioned in her preface that the only picture of Ms Lacks she had when she started researching the book was a faded one with one corner missing and how much that photo made her want to know the woman's story.
~~~~~
Tomorrow is December first. How time flies when you're having fun.
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 29
Nov. 29th, 2016 09:02 pmLovely day - 13 C, sunny, dry. I have pansies and snapdragons blossoming, and teeny tiny new strawberries. I might be living in an AU.
~~~~~
~~~~~
Prompts:
Nov. 28: What was your most precious possession when you were a kid?
It changed over time, of course. I had a doll named TeeCee that was with me from the time I was about six months old. I had a sparkly purple bike with a banana seat and a sissy bar that had mod flowers on the saddle that made me the envy of the other kids. I had my own private record player which made me very popular. I had an amethyst ring (my birthstone) that, in retrospect, had an ugly setting, but there you go.
Nov. 29: What was your most embarrassing or scary trip to the doctor?
My son was four years old and had begun projectile vomitting, then started convulsing. That scared the crap out of me. Luckily, he was okay - it was just the a bad case of a stomach bug leading to dehydration and as soon at they got his fever down and got him rehydrated he was okay. But it was scary. It was terrifying.
~~~~~
One Word Prompt: Culture. Which, as I had hammered into me in the first year anthropology, is "extrasomatic means of adapting to an environment." (Thank you, Lewis Binford!) All of which sort of explains the way I see the world. I tend to look at things (most things - many, many things) as adaptive or maladaptive, through the prism of evolutionary advantage or disadvantage. It might not be the 'right' way to group things, but it is 'a' way. Mostly, it works. (Also, I am a lumper as opposed to a splitter. Cuz you wanted to know - you know you did.)

Rogue One. Every one seems to think I should care. I can muster no interest whatsoever. How about you? |

NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 28
Nov. 28th, 2016 08:28 pmSunny. Cold. Winter. Poop.
~~~~~~
~~~~~~
Rudolph in Hi Def next Tuesday. Gosh.

~~~~~
The prompt page isn't working! What am I supposed to do? Think up stuff by myself???
~~~~~~
One Word prompt: Vigor (spelled wrong) Vigour if you are me. I could go into a thing about -or vs -our endings and -er vs -re, but boring. Instead it reminds me of the phase hybrid vigour, or heterosis. This is the idea that outbreeding is better than inbreeding, which is generally true. This has given us super cute things like Labradoodles and Bullpeis. Biodiversity for the win! Woot!

NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 27
Nov. 27th, 2016 08:18 pmNicer day today with lots of sunshine. I am pro sunshine.
~~~~~
Last night I went to a hockey game! The home team won! It was a great game, over all, with lots of the other team not winning! (I am biased - sue me!) One of the highlights was the TimBits hockey game between the first and second periods - 5 and 6 year olds playing on the Maple Leafs home ice! ADORABLE!
~~~~~
One Word Prompt: Pungent. Which, omg, I was in the grocery store with my daughter today and the lady next to us reached into a bin to pull out a potato and her fingers broke the skin of it and it was all rotten and liquid inside! UGH! The smell was literally stomach-turning. She shrieked. We gagged. It was FOUL. (If you have never smelled the wonder that is a fully rotten potato, count yourself lucky. It is super-gross)
~~~~~
And you?
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 26
Nov. 26th, 2016 08:54 amBusy day today so I am striking while the iron is, er, not even slightly heated yet.
~~~~~~
Grey grey grey!!! ARGH!!!
~~~~~~
First panettone of the season! Yum!!!!!! Can the unmitigated horror that is Christmas be far behind? (hint - No. No it can't)
~~~~~~
Phineas and Ferb is on. That stuff is brilliant.
~~~~~~
marakara informs me they are rebooting Sleepy Hollow. Talk about feeling conflicted. On one hand, I looked forward to watching the bad bad badness of it and the good good prettiness of Tom Mison. On the other hand, it was so bad. So so bad. And now theyve lost one of their leads. I will probably tune in anyway, just to see how bad the bad is Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised?
~~~~~~
Fidel Castro died. Things have already loosened up a bit in Cuba, but what will this mean in the immediate and long-term? (Full disclosure - I am probably one of four Canadians who has never spent a rum soaked week at a Cuban resort {and the other three are old-school Mennonites with aviophobia.}) I hope they enjoy peace and prosperity going forward.
~~~~~~
One Word Prompt: Liminal. Which reminds me of words I have to look up because I think I know what they mean and then I realize, no, I really don't. So:
So, basically, LIMINAL is a word I have no real use for. There are perfectly good English words I can use in its place. Should I think of one, you'll be the first to know. ;)
lim·i·nal
ˈlimənl/<input ... >
adjective
technical
adjective: liminal
- 1.of or relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.
- 2.occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 25
Nov. 25th, 2016 09:05 pmCold and rainy. Feh.
~~~~~
I went to the grocery store at 7:30 this morning (because I was awake and what the hell?) and they were having their Black Friday Sale! Okay, first of all, WE did not have Thanksgiving yesterday, and second, Black Friday groceries? Come on.
~~~~~
Snoop and Martha's Potluck Dinner Party. The fuck? I mean, really, the fuck? Two eps in and I am not closer to an answer.
~~~~~
Today's prompt:
Nov. 25: What do you think we could all do better with if we looked at it with a child's eyes?
Leisure. Little kids can have fun with a stick, a piece of paper, some mud, a set of measuring cups. They don't need wifi for anything. They don't need to have every moment of every day scheduled for them. I think we'd all benefit from taking that view.
~~~~~
One Word Prompt: Sated. Which is how I feel right now. I made pizza using the last of our garden cherry tomatoes and basil for dinner, and then I ate it! It was delicious. Here is a picture that should be rotated 90 degrees.
~~~~~~~

NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 24
Nov. 24th, 2016 07:39 pmRainy cold grey yucky. Yuck.
~~~~~
Happy Thanksgiving to those of you celebrating. Hope you had a great day!
~~~~~
My daughter's car battery went flat this morning and she needed a lift. She moved over the weekend and when I asked for her address she ... didn't know. Well, she knew approximately. Kinda. In a way. Sorta. Fun? Oh yeah.
~~~~~
I had some bananas going black and I didn't want to make banana bread so I made Heavenly Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. They are very tasty and I'd make them again, but I think they'd benefit from some peanut butter. As would so many things.
~~~~~
Today's prompt:
Nov. 24: Have you ever rage-quit a job?
Nah, that's not my style. I am a 'revenge best served cold' kinda girl.
~~~~~
One word prompt: Chaotic. which reminds me of Chaos. Which natually reminds me of KAOS
Get Smart was must-watch tv when we were kids, as were the after-school reruns. My mom and especially my dad loved the show. We still quote from it more than probably makes sense considering it went off the air in 1970 - "Not the craw, the craw!" "the Cone of Silence" "Would you believe..." ) A couple of years ago we found the first season on DVD, and, yeah it hasn't held up, but there you go. (P.S. I wanted to love the Steve Carrell/Anne Hathaway reboot, but no. No no no. No.) |
How was your day?
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 23
Nov. 23rd, 2016 09:02 pmGrey grey grey day. And now it's snowing. Feh.
~~~~~~~
Took my mom for her oncology check up. Everything's good so WOOT! (Everything but the traffic - oy!)
~~~~~~
IKEA no longer has lingonberry juice in the cafeteria. What is the point of you now, IKEA cafeteria?????
~~~~~~
Today's prompt:
Nov. 23: What’s the weirdest/grossest thing your pet has ever done?
When I was a kid we had a cat who used to put dead mice in the barbeque. It was one of those 70's kettle drum styles things that burned actual charcoal. She'd somehow knock the lid off and stick mice in there. It was plenty weird. And gross.

This, but in avocado green. With dead mice.
~~~~~~~
One Word Prompt: Anticipation. Which, if you are a certain age (as they say) leads you to your youth (1971, in fact) and Carly Simon's song of the same name. I am not a huge Carly Simon fan - I have always found her voice not...quite...right...somehow. But she was decidedly a big deal when I was young. And of course, Anticipation was used to advertize Heinz ketchup toward the end of the 70's, making it doubly sure the song would never leave my head.
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 22
Nov. 22nd, 2016 07:17 pmDay 22! How time flies!
~~~~~~~
This cold thing looks like it's here to stay.. I blame
franthewndrhrse - she thought it was a good idea!
~~~~~~~
The first episode of Love Sick Season 2 is really good. This bodes well.
~~~~~~~
I dropped some pasta and it rolled under the stove today so I thought while I was at it I'd clean under the stove. YUCK! I suspect I wiped out whole emerging civilizations.
~~~~~~~
Best episode yet of Timeless. It was like an adult wrote most of it. Woot for adults writing things!
~~~~~~~
Today's prompt:
Nov. 22: What TV show are you obsessed with? Share 10 reasons it’s better than the other shows.
Seriously? If anyone reading this hasn't figured this one out, I just give up.
~~~~~~~~
One word prompt: Elicit. Which of course make me think of illicit. And solicit. And explicit. And complicit. All those -cit words. It's been many years since I napped through Latin class, but there's clearly a pattern going on here.
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 21
Nov. 21st, 2016 09:15 pmCold. Windy. Feh.
~~~~~~~
My husband is watching MARS on NatGeo. It's making me angry. The propaganda interspersed with the fake drama is laced with poisoned kool-aid - "We need to go to Mars because it's our best chance of surviving as a species!" Why, exactly, should our species survive? When an environment can no longer support a population, the population dies out. End of. Manned space anything is a waste of time, money, talent, brain power, resources, and potential. Elon Musk is very rich and can spend his damned money anyway he wants to, but ego and vanity are not the same as need. Grrrrrrrrrrr.
~~~~~~
Today's very first-world problem (yeah yeah, that's not politically correct, whatever) : My husband bought a raffle ticket from one of the guys at work (in support of his son's team or school or school team or something) last spring and won the grand prize. Which is an 84" HD 3D LED EIEIO TV. Which, yes, is a really big TV. So we had to buy a stand for it. Anyway, last evening I am sitting here watching it and I realized there is now no where to put the Christmas tree. Stupid thing, but...
~~~~~~
Remember last year when I recommended a Netflix show called Scrotal Recall? They've renamed it Love Sick (easier sell, I suspect) and have released a second season. I rewatched the first season today (I was on going to watch two eps, but yeah, no) and it's every bit as brilliant as I remember. Johnny Flynn, Daniel Ings, and Antonia Thomas are amazing, and the supporting cast is great. Going to try to watch one second season ep tomorrow. Will probably watch more ;)
~~~~~~~
Today's prompt:
Nov. 21: What is the one thing you wish people better understood about something in your life?
I think I'd like them to grasp the fact that my online friends are, in fact, my friends. I don't appreciate it when I say, "My friend X who lives in Y" and the reaction is a knowing look which suggests my 'internet friend' is imaginary. Bite me.
And then there is the "if you like to write, why aren't you making money at it?" brigade. I also like to shower and eat chocolate and sew and sleep, but I don't expect anyone to pay me to do those things. There are hobbies and there are jobs. Writing is my hobby.
~~~~~~~
Today's one word prompt is Aromatic. Which makes me think of cooking. Aromatics are different combinations of herbs and/or vegetables used to start off different dishes - mirepoix (celery, onion, carrot) soffritto (add garlic), sofrito (add tomato and bell pepper) - heated in oil or other fat. Aromatics are the start of many, many good things. Serious Eats has a great selection of recipes which make particular use of aromatic combos.

Nov. 20th, 2016 09:42 pmSNOW! It isn't sticking, but it's so cold and not warm. NOT WARM!
~~~~~~~
Finally saw Doctor Strange. I vote yes. :D
~~~~~~~~
I first saw Alexei Sayle approximately 150 years ago in The Young Ones. He's currently got a new radio series on BBC 4 called Alexei Sayle's Imaginary Sandwich Bar. It's brilliant. If you've got 28 minutes, treat yourself.
~~~~~~~~~
Oh, Poldark. Still bonkers.
~~~~~~~~~~
Today's one word prompt: Scorched. As in scorched Earth policy. Oh, Machiavelli, you have been a bad influence on me.

NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 19
Nov. 19th, 2016 08:29 pmSo we got rain today...and cold...and they are promising snow. Ugh.
~~~~~~
Why do the dogs always look so surprised when I sneeze? They sneeze all the time and I don't feel the need to draw attention to it by staring.
~~~~~~
I went grocery shopping at 7 am today. Grocery stores are very different places at 7 am. For one thing, most of the bread isn't out of the oven. Also, one cashier. And she only looks kind of awake.
~~~~~~
Tried to get some Christmas gifts today. Settled for $200 in gift cards. Merry freakin' Christmas, to yooooooooooooo!
~~~~~~
Today's one word prompt is OSTENTATIOUS. Would screwing up rush hour traffic by closing the Lincoln Tunnel so your motorcade can get to a golf course count? Cuz yeah. Every time one president or another visits New York
marakara regales us with stories of closed streets and snarled traffic and detours and general mayhem. I can only imagine how that crap once a week or so is going to impress good-natured easy-going New Yorkers.
~~~~~~~
Today is the feast day of
Plan the rest of your day accordingly.
Nov. 18th, 2016 09:20 pmSunny, breezy, beautiful day, around 14C. It's supposed to snow Sunday.
~~~~~
Today is my baby's 25th birthday. How did this happen? HOW???
~~~~~
My spiderplant suddenly looks really depressed. Is this just a winter thing? Anyone?
~~~~
Todays prompt:
Nov. 18: What's the dumbest thing you and your partner have ever fought about?
We don't fight much. It used to kind of irritate me, because I'd say he'd have to actually listen to me to be part of an argument, but that was before we discovered he's got a significant level of hearing loss and hasn't just been ignoring me for x-teen years. When we do have issues, it's mainly about he and the now 25 year old baby snarking at each other (and both needing desperately to have the last word) and me asking them - very loudly - to shut the fuck up. Yeah. (I can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about it.)
~~~~~
One Word Prompt: Mythical. When I was in first year at university, I had to take a history course for...reasons (I can't remember why - I just had to.) I had hated hated hated history in high school, and unhappily endured the two-and-a half courses I had to take in order to graduate. It was dry, it was dull, it was full of dates and missing anything vaguely resembling relevance or context. So I was not thrilled about having to take a history class, but I figured I'd take an introductory level course and never have to take anymore the end. Only I took a course called History, Myth, and Legend taught by Dr Rebecca Colman (who, if she is still alive, must be in her late 90's). We covered lots of interesting topics, like Beowulf, King Arthur, Chaucer, Robin Hood, Piers Plowman, etc etc. Dr Colman made it interesting, relevant, and entertaining. In the end, I ended up majoring in history. So there you go.
Today is my baby's 25th birthday. How did this happen? HOW???
~~~~~
My spiderplant suddenly looks really depressed. Is this just a winter thing? Anyone?

NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 17
Nov. 17th, 2016 09:00 pmAnother gorgeous day. Madness. MADNESS!
~~~~~
I bought a new frying pan today. Oh yeah, that's how I roll, baby. Also, potting soil. I don't plan to use the two together. I will let you know if either lives up to the hype.
~~~~~
Today's Prompt:
Nov. 17: What is the hardest lesson you’ve learned from having pets?
Aside from the fact that dogs don't live forever (or anything close to forever) the hardest lesson is probably that if you decide to invite a wolf to live in your house, you end up with a WOLF LIVING IN YOUR HOUSE. At best you are the head of your pack; more likely you are a lesser member of your dog's pack. You both have to learn your place. Cesar the Dog Whisperer aside, it's generally a challenge.
~~~~~
One word prompt: Percolate. Which makes me think of percolators. When I was a kid, the neighbourhood ladies (they were women, but I don't think anyone had told them) would sometimes get together and 'lock' all us kids in the family/rec room and tell us to 'just go play!' and then they'd drink coffee. Lots and lots and lots of coffee. In those dark days, it was percolated - terrible coffee from often dangerous appliances (Plastic!? Really!?) But they were lovely in a way only the ugly things of the 1970's could be, and usually matched the curtains/carpet/fridge/wallpaper.
The smell of unnecessarily strong over boiled coffee always takes me back to those days.
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 16
Nov. 16th, 2016 10:10 pmOkay so I sneezed so hard today that I can't get my right eye to focus. I'd laugh hysterically if I weren't ready to scream in terror, you know?
~~~~~~
The weather is still warmer than TPTB claim it should be. But it rained. Trade off? You be the judge.
~~~~~~
My December issue of HGTV magazine arrived! Talk about your guilty pleasures (this from a woman whose house is still painted real estate agent recommended beige 9 years after I moved in because I just can't decide...)
~~~~~~
Saw the first Fererro Rocher commercial of the season. Bonkers as always (and I hate hazelnuts, so yuck).
~~~~~~
Today's prompt:
Nov. 16: What TV series finale are you still upset about and why?
The Show it All Goes Back To (tm
marakara) aka the X-Files, for one. The last two seasons (at least) were a mess, then the finale was - feh. I wanted closure (how yuppy of me) but I did not get it. (Buffy ended horribly, too, but I had stopped watching after the dreadful 4th season so I probably have no right to bitch.)
~~~~~~~~
Today's one-word prompt is : Filthy, which makes me think of filthy lucre. It sounds so much more alluring than dirty money or ill-gotten gains.

NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 15
Nov. 15th, 2016 08:40 pmThe weather remains awesome. How long can it last? HOW LONG???
~~~~~
The Festive Special is back! Woo hoo!
~~~~~
I have eyebrow dandruff. How is this even a thing?
~~~~~
Todays Prompt:
Nov. 15: What are the best/worst dishes at Thanksgiving dinner?
The worst is canned yams with brown sugar and marshmallows. Come on! You put all that stuff together and the end result is not food. It's - non-toxic, but not food. I refuse to make it, in no small part because everyone insisted it be included, then no one ate it. I am all for tradition, but not futility.
The best aside from the turkey (because I make AWESOME TURKEY because I salt brine it at least overnight, cook it at 350F until it reaches 165F, then I let it rest under foil and bath towels for THREE HOURS. It's delicious. Really.) is mashed potatoes. Because they are mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes are delicious.
~~~~~
One Word Prompt: Tart. Which makes me think of the Black Bottom Tart I saw Martha Stewart make the other night. It looks like this:
Yum.
~~~~~
And you?
Layers of semisweet chocolate, rum-flavored vanilla custard, and stiff whipped cream delight in this tart twist on a favorite pie. |
Yum.
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 14
Nov. 14th, 2016 09:05 pmMy son-in-law went to Montreal over the weekend and he brought back 8 dozen Fairmount bagels! we had some with dinner. Soooooooooo delicious!
~~~~~~~
Leonard Cohen died. Janet Wright died. Gwen Ifill died. 2016 just keeps on sucking.
~~~~~~~
Today's prompt:
Nov. 14: What was it like to be you in 2016?
It involved a lot of driving. My mom was diagnosed with lymphoma in...March? April? Something like that, and asked if I could accompany her to her chemo/doctor appointments. I could and did, but navigating rush hour traffic was challenging, to say the least. It's normally a 45 minute drive to her place, but there were a few days where it took two hours. (How do people do that every day, five or more days a week? How???) By the time I got there, I was ready for a nap, and the day had hardly begun. On the upside, she's been given the all-clear and she's doing well. But the driving? I do not miss it. (And let's not even start on parking at the hospital.)
~~~~~~~~~~
Today's one word prompt is: Fish. Which made me think of this:

They look so cool. But fish are alive and it really would be hard to keep them so in something this small. But I like the idea in principle.

NaBloPoMo - Day 13
Nov. 13th, 2016 08:53 pmToday I went to a football game. I am not a footbal person, but we got free tickets to a play-off game AND free parking. I mean, FREE PARKING. It was sunny and quite windy. But my husband and I had a lot of fun.(Psssst. The home team lost. Boooo!)
~~~~~~
Today's one word prompt is LOFTY. Lofty led me to 'lofty ideals.' I have been accused of having such ideals a few times lately, and - surprise! - not in a good way. But that's just who I am. Deal ;)
How was your weekend?
NaBloPoMo 2016 - Day 12
Nov. 12th, 2016 09:06 pmBusy day full of freezer cooking. My daughters and I made green chicken enchiladas (the sauce is green, not the chicken,) lasagna rolls, meat balls, and chocolate chip cookie dough. Now I am tired.
~~~~~~~~
Sunny today, but colder and windy. Poop :(
~~~~~
I saw an article entitled Don't Judge a Person by Their Viewpoints. That's EXACLTY what I judge a person by. What's the alternative? Their height? Shoe size? Handbag? Sheeesh.
~~~~~~
Today's one word prompt is Flames. So my first thought is Calgary. Yeah, I'm Canadian.
~~~~~~
Must sleep. Must sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
