Went to the store today. Someone had vomited Christmas all over it n the course of the past 48 hours.  It was also 20C outside - 68F in ye olde schoole measuring system - and therefore way too hot to be taking anything Christmas-based even slightly seriously.  How do people in Florida or California or heck, Australia, ever manage to get in the holiday mood?  This may explain why songs like White Wine in the Sun exist.

Remember the furniture I sanded yesterday? (Pretend you do.)  Today we spray-varnished it.  Since it was lovely outside, my daughter and I decided to work in the back yard.  Here is a picture of my grand-puppy, Ziggy, doing her part by weighing down the drop sheet.  Just call her DIY-Puppy.
Ziggy helps us diy by valiantly holding down the drop sheet.
Why yes she IS the cutest puppy ever!  How clever of you to notice!

Oh My GOD, Agents of Shield! Oh my god! I did not see that coming!  I doubt anyone did.

Tomorrow, my brand spanking new Prime Minister is naming his cabinet.  As a life-long Liberal - and someone whose very first opportunity to vote was to vote in favour of said new prime minister's father - I think I should be  considered for a cabinet post.  I think Minister for Procrastination would suit me exactly as well as I would suit it.

Today's NaBloPoMo question is:

What did you think was the coolest job in the world when you were younger? Do you still feel that way now?

I really wanted to be an archeologist.  It seemed exciting and dangerous and glamourous.  I was always looking for fossils (I admit, the difference between paleontology and archeology didn't become absolutely clear to me for a number of years, but I digress.)   I had fantasies of wearing khaki shorts and shirts 24/7, owning desert boots that were actually comfortable, and never leaving my rugged-yet-comfortable tent without having a red bandana tied artfully around my neck.  I imagined being famous and rich (since, why have one without the other?) for digging up the oldest human remains ever found.

In reality, a degree in anthropology (specializing in archeology) taught me that the field was about writing grants, endless fun-raising, kissing way too much ass, and politics.  And, oh, if you got very lucky, a few weeks or months in one dusty/swampy/blazing/frigid hellhole or another, working against the clock to finish SOMETHING before winter/rain/a junta/arthritis/running out of money made digging impossible. Furthermore, I just could not drink enough to keep up with the professionals.
How about you?
What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a botanical geneticist. If I'd followed through on that dream, I'd've been employed by Monsanto & would've committed suicide by now from their unethical practices I wouldn't be allowed to whistleblow due to non-competition/non-disclosure contracts I'd be forced to sign.

You might have ended up working for an eco-friendly organic seed company. And you'd have probably starved. Idealism tends to be low in calories.

I wanted to be a fashion designer.

Minister of Procrastination. LOL. I qualify for that, too.

The original Christmas took place in a Mediterranean climate zone not so dissimilar from my own. Besides, Christmas comes but once a year and we have sunshine all year round. Until the Drought, this was considered a good thing.

Oooh, I think we all did at one time. I was forever making Barbie clothes from kleenex, scraps of fabric, tissue paper, scotch tape, rubber bands...

68F is perfect Christmas weather. Low winter sun giving everything a golden glow, crisp breezes through the tinder-dry pine fronds...ah, memories.

I'm sure if it's what you are used to, that's exactly how Christmas feels. And honestly, not being up to my neck in snow/slush for the holidays sounds enchanting.

I wanted to be a spy when I was a kid. I blame "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." It didn't help that I was geeky as hell. I would put on my rain coat and run around the neighborhood pretending I was making courier drops. Sigh. Those were the days.

Also a good choice. I used to make up codes and leave notes around, hoping SOMEONE would pick them up, decode them, and then...then...well, I wasn't so clear on that part. But creating the codes and sneaking around was fun. And I had a serious crush on Ilya Kuryakin, so, you know, he and I could have worked together. It would have been very romantic.

My huge crush was Illya too. We could have been partners in crime if it wasn't for the distance and the fact that we were kids and couldn't drive.

Yeah, the not driving thing would definitely have held us back.

I ... don't think I really thought about what I'd do for work as an adult. Which might be what led me to my current jobless situation. ;-)
